OUR SUSTAINABLE JOURNEY – AS A SMALL MEDITERRANEAN BRAND
REDUCING WASTE

We're doing our part in reducing waste by utilizing recycled materials throughout our products and packaging.

Our carefully selected recycled fabric, recycled paper tags, and recycled plastic packaging ziplock bags all contribute to our efforts in minimising post-consume waste. Additionally, we're extremely mindful of our production process, carefully cutting our fabrics to maximise usage. By producing our swimwear in limited quantities, we ensure that every piece is meaningful and nothing goes to waste.

LOCAL AND ETHICAL PARTNERS

FABRIC SUPPLIERS

We exclusively work with Oeko-Tex certified suppliers, ensuring that the materials we use are free from harmful substances and are manufactured in an environmentally responsible manner. We aim to keep our supply chain as minimal as possible to reduce our carbon footprint and support local businesses. By keeping our production local, we can ensure fair labor practices, quality control, and build long-lasting and ethical relationships with our partners.

LOCAL WORKSHOPS

Our swimwear, candles, and bandanas are born from the collaboration between Paume and the local, small workshops and incredibly talented individuals who share our vision for quality, sustainability and art. Our swimwear collection is brought to life in Istanbul by a dedicated team of just four workers, each piece machine sewn with precision and care. Our candles are hand-poured in Kaş into ceramics that are crafted locally in Bodrum.

RESCUE AND REMAKE

In a world where the ocean floors are blanketed with over 14 million tonnes of microplastics and the EU alone sees about 5.8 million tonnes of textiles discarded annually, the need for action is undeniable.

Our commitment to sustainability and reducing our ecological footprint is embodied in our partnership with ECONYL®. By incorporating regenerated ECONYL® nylon into our swimwear, we are choosing a path that significantly diminishes the potential for waste to harm our planet's ecosystems.

What is Regenerated Nylon Econyl® Fabric  ?

Regenerated nylon fabric, notably branded as Econyl®, is a pioneering material in the sustainable textiles industry, developed in Italy. Econyl® nylon is created through a regeneration and purification process that transforms nylon waste—such as fishing nets, fabric scraps, carpet flooring, and industrial plastic—into a new nylon yarn with the same quality as virgin nylon. The innovation behind Econyl® lies in its circular lifecycle, which significantly reduces the environmental impacts associated with traditional nylon production, such as reliance on petroleum as a raw material and the emission of greenhouse gases.

The process of creating Econyl® involves several key steps:

  1. Collection of Waste: The first step is gathering nylon waste from landfills and oceans around the world. This includes materials that are otherwise non-biodegradable and would remain in the ecosystem for centuries, posing a threat to wildlife and marine life.
  2. Regeneration and Purification: The collected waste is then cleaned and processed through a depolymerization process that breaks down the nylon waste into its basic building blocks. These blocks are then purified and prepared for the production of new nylon yarn.
  3. Creation of New Yarn: The regenerated building blocks are processed into new nylon yarn, producing Econyl®. This yarn boasts the same qualities and performance as virgin nylon, making it a direct substitute for new nylon in the production of various products.
  4. Recyclability: One of the most significant advantages of Econyl® is its ability to be recycled, recreated, and remolded infinitely without losing its quality. This presents a sustainable loop that can significantly reduce the need for new raw materials and minimize waste.

Econyl® nylon is used in a wide range of products, from fashion items like swimwear and activewear to industrial products such as carpets and upholstery. Its development represents a significant step forward in sustainable materials, offering a practical solution to waste reduction and the conservation of resources. The use of Econyl® reflects a growing trend in the textile and fashion industries towards more environmentally responsible practices, highlighting the industry's potential to contribute to a more sustainable future.

What is Global Recycled Standard ® Certification?

Our entire swimwear line and our recycled zip-lock bags are Global Recycled Standard Certified. The Global Recycled Standard (GRS) is a voluntary product standard for tracking and verifying the content of recycled materials in a final product. The standard applies to the full supply chain and addresses traceability, environmental principles, social requirements, and labeling. Managed by the Textile Exchange, a global nonprofit organization, the GRS aims to increase the use of recycled materials in products and reduce/eliminate the harm caused by its production.

The key components of the GRS include:

  1. Content Claim: Products certified under the GRS must contain a minimum percentage of recycled content. The standard encourages the use of recycled materials to reduce the consumption of virgin resources.
  2. Chain of Custody: The GRS ensures that the identity of recycled materials is maintained from the source to the final product. This traceability is crucial for verifying the recycled content claims made on products.
  3. Social and Environmental Requirements: The standard includes environmental processing requirements, including restrictions on the use of chemicals and water usage. It also includes social requirements based on the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) core conventions, aimed at ensuring that production processes are socially responsible.
  4. Chemical Restrictions: The GRS restricts the use of harmful chemicals in the production process, aiming to protect the environment and workers from exposure to toxic substances.
  5. Labeling: The GRS provides guidelines for labeling, allowing consumers to make informed choices about the products they purchase. Certified products can carry a label that indicates the percentage of recycled content, providing transparency and credibility to the claim.

By adhering to the GRS, companies can demonstrate their commitment to sustainable practices, reduce their environmental impact, and offer consumers products made with recycled materials. The standard is used by brands, manufacturers, and retailers to ensure that their products meet high levels of environmental and social responsibility.

Why is Forest Friendly FSC® Packaging important?

Forest Friendly FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®) Packaging is crucial for several environmental, social, and economic reasons, as it represents a commitment to responsible forest management and sustainable practices. FSC® is an international, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world's forests. Its certification system provides a reliable standard for forest products, including packaging, ensuring they are sourced in an environmentally friendly, socially beneficial, and economically viable manner. The importance of Forest Friendly FSC® Packaging can be highlighted in the following aspects:

  1. Environmental Conservation: FSC® certification ensures that products come from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental benefits. These forests are managed in a way that preserves biological diversity, water resources, and crucial ecosystems, contributing to the overall health of the planet. FSC® packaging signifies that the materials used have not contributed to the destruction of forests, deforestation, or harm to wildlife habitats.
  2. Climate Change Mitigation: Forests play a critical role in carbon sequestration, absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere. By promoting the responsible management and use of forest resources, FSC® helps in the fight against climate change. Sustainable forestry practices encouraged by FSC® certification ensure that forest carbon stocks are maintained or enhanced, reducing the impact of greenhouse gas emissions.
  3. Social Benefits: FSC® certification also carries with it a commitment to respecting the rights of indigenous peoples, workers, and local communities. It ensures that the economic and social well-being of local communities is taken into account, supporting sustainable livelihoods and contributing to the reduction of poverty.
  4. Economic Sustainability: By fostering responsible forest management, FSC® contributes to the long-term economic sustainability of forest-based industries and communities. It helps in creating a stable supply of forest products, including packaging materials, ensuring that these resources remain available for future generations without compromising the health of the world's forests.
  5. Consumer Trust: FSC® certification provides a credible link between responsible production and consumption. It offers consumers the assurance that the products they buy come from responsibly managed forests. This transparency builds consumer trust and allows individuals to make more environmentally conscious choices.
  6. Market Access: For businesses, using FSC® certified packaging can open up new markets and improve brand reputation. Many consumers and companies are increasingly demanding sustainably sourced products, and FSC® certification can be a key differentiator in the marketplace.

In summary, Forest Friendly FSC® Packaging is important because it ensures that the production and use of packaging materials contribute positively to the conservation of forests, the mitigation of climate change, and the well-being of communities involved in forestry.
